On the Divinity of Second Chances
by Kaya McLaren

Summary

A broken family finds its way back together in this captivating story from the author of Church of the Dog.

How did it come to this? Jade asks herself as she looks at her completely mixed-up family.

Besieged by menopause, Jade's mother spends her time painting still lives of raisins, and sleeps outside on a lawn chair at night. Dad has simply checked out since retiring, lost in a world of cabinet rearranging and hardware alphabetization. Forrest, Jade's brother carries a terrible secret guilt that threatens to crush him. Even Olive, the straight-laced sister, has her secret that will push her parents closer to the edge.

But with the help of a group of tap-dancing old ladies, a sensual tango teacher, bagpipes, and a lot of luck, Jade's family is about to get a second chance. And sometimes, second chances are even better than the first.

Praise

"McLaren's involving novel is an uplifting story about unconditional love and family ties." — Booklist.

"An upbeat antidote to the querulous times in which we live. Why not treat yourself?" — The Bellingham Herald.

"On the Divinity of Second Chances is a book that will steal your heart, and just may heal it too." — Jennie Shortridge, author of When She Flew.

"When I met Jade — a girl trying to hold onto the kiet strings of her flying-apart family without being pulled off the ground — I wanted to shelter her and all her kith from emotional destruction. On the Divinity of Second Chances is not unfairly called divine." — Jacquelyn Mitchard, author of The Deep End of the Ocean.

About the Author

Kaya McLaren, author of Church of the Dog and On the Divinity of Second Chances, lives and teaches on the east slope of Snoqualmie Pass near Cle Elum. When Kaya's not working, she likes to telemark ski, sit in hot springs, moonlight hike, and play in lakes with her dog, Big Cedar.

Kaya says: "When the good times roll around, drink it up, soak it up, whatever strengthens you... All of us get pinned to the mat in one way or another. How we pick ourselves up when we get pinned to the mat - that's what inspires me. That's what all my books are about in one way or another: second chances, turning points... [and] how much courage it takes to live big and to love big."
